As ancient Rome grew larger, the need for goods like grains, tools and building materials grew also. The wealthy Romans started to want luxury items like gold, ivory, amber and animal skins. This caused trading to become very important in Rome. They were in contact with many civilizations around the Mediterranean sea so a lot of trading took place over the sea. Many more harbours were build to make this possible. Rome also traded over land, building many new roads to trade with many other cities. Merchants and travellers collected goods, carrying them on the backs of donkeys and camels or in a cart pulled by oxen.
