In Rome, only wealthy boys received a proper education. The girls learnt to read and write but mainly focused on domestic skills like spinning and weaving. Teachers were most often slaves and frequently Greek. The subjects studied usually included music, history, geography, astronomy, mathematics and the reading and writing of Greek and Latin. Boys normally finished their education at the age of 16 when they became a full Roman citizen.
