Housing
The poor people of Rome lived in urban areas, cramped into tiny rooms in buildings with many storeys. These buildings were called insulae. To get water it had to be carried in pots from the wells which could sometimes be long distances away. They had to walk to a public toilet and used a shared sponge instead of toilet paper.
The wealthy had homes full of modern conveniences including running water and a private toilet. There were many rooms and the houses were decorated by artworks, mosaics and statues. These houses were surrounded by gardens and pools and in addition to this, many wealthy romans owned additional county estates which were called villas.
