During the roman republic-509 to 27BC-two elected consuls ruled, advised by a Senate. New consuls were elected every year and Julius Caesar was one of the most powerful. In 27BC his successor Octavian, later know as Augustus, gained total power and the Senate lost most of it's influence. Historians refer to the rulers of Rome as Emperors but during that time they never called themselves that. They were many 'Emperors of Rome, including Nero, Augustus, Caligula and Marcus Aurelius.
