Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar was born a Patrician in 100BC . His parents were Gaius Julius Caesar, financial officer and governor, and wealthy Aurelia Cotta. Being a Patrician, he would have received a good education and would be expected to become a politician like his father. He became the head of his family at the age of 16 when his father died. In 84BC, when he was 18 years old, he married Cornelia Cinilla.
Caesar and his family was considered an enemy of Sulla, the ruler of Rome at the time. He was forced to leave Rome to avoid persecution and being killed. He then joined the army. When Sulla died in 78BC Julius Caesar came back to Rome and quickly gained popularity and a powerful position. In 68BC he was elected to be a financial officer, and later governor of the province of Spain.
He returned back to Rome in 60BC and was elected as consul in 59BC. Once his service of one year had finished, he became the governor of the Roman province of Gaul. Caesar military victories in Gaul added a lot of new land to the Roman Republic. The new Senate of Rome was now led by Pompey, who did not support Caesar. Pompey worried about Caesar's rising power and popularity and in 49BC when ordered to give up command of Gaul, he refused. Instead, he returned to Rome with his army. Pompey fled to Egypt but Caesar followed. The Egyptian king, Ptolemy III, killed Pompey and offered him to Caesar.
King Ptolemy's older sister and co ruler, Queen Cleopatra, gained Caesar's affection and he helped her take the throne for herself. They had a child, Caesarion, in 47BC and together they returned to Rome. There Caesar introduced new currency, calendar and set up new Roman Colonies in Africa, Gaul and Greece.
On March 15th 44BC a group of 60 senators, unhappy with his rulership, stabbed Caesar to death. His death marked the end of the Roman Republic and led to a civil War in Rome lasting 15 years. Although in his life Caesar had many political enemies, ordinary people supported him. In 42BC he was a officially mad e a god and a temple was dedicated to him in Rome.
