EVERYDAY LIFE
Everyone in Rome lived differently. For example, a ruler would have a very different daily routine to a slave. Even a woman's life was extremely different to that of her husband's...
Metella woke up at dawn every morning. She'd put on her stola and her sandals. Her slave, Melissa, helped her put on her jewellery, and did her hair and makeup. She decided to go to the baths today with her daughter, Valeria, so she put on a shawl as well. She went to the dining room to have breakfast, and she saw Valeria and her son, Maximus, sitting there, eagerly awaiting their meal. Metella sat down and orderd her slave to take Maximus to school once he had finished his meal. Their breakfast was simple, just fresh bread and water.
Maximus was busled off to school while Valeria and Metella went to the baths taking Melissa. The town was very busy and people were pushing them left, right and centre. They had quick stop at the temple of Mars to pray for Metella's husband, Octavius, who was fighting for Julius Caesar. They then went off to the baths. On the way, Valeria need to go to the bathroom, so they stopped at the public toilets. Metella and Melissa waited outside while Valeria used the toilet.
At the baths, they washed themselves. Valeria saw her friend Alexis and they played a game of marbles.
By the time they had gotten home, Maximus was home from school and playing knuckle bones. Because it was summer, they ate at the dining room in the back of the house. Melissa had cooked some rabbit and they ate it. Finally, Metella finished weaving her basket that she had started the night before and then went to bed.
