Social Hierarchy
In Rome there was a complicated set of rules and customs. The hierarchy was a bit like a triangle, with slaves and peasants at the bottom and the leaders at the top. Women were also not considered with very high status. Not all people were citizens and only male citizens could attend special meetings. All of these men were of high status so any decisions they made at these meetings were often only for rich people. This meant that the poor were often left with laws that they could not really obey as they did not have the money or supplies to.
